Trends in Tile: Updating Your Kitchen Backsplash

The kitchen is the heart of the home. It is where most people gather with friends and family and spend a good amount of time, sharing meals and conversation. Because of that, kitchen design and the trends that follow have become just as important for people as other design focuses for the home. One of the most popular areas to design in a kitchen is the backsplash. It allows homeowners to add a bit of their own style into the kitchen through beautiful tile. The white tile look in a kitchen will always be timeless look to go for, but some of the latest trends in kitchen tile decor show how daring you can getโ€” more color, more patterns, & more textures. If you are looking to refresh your kitchen decor by adding (or updating) a tile backsplash and want to try something new and fresh, the current trends in kitchen backsplashes are worth checking out :

1 COLORED TILES

This is by far my favorite backsplash trend right now โ€” the emergence of any and all colored tile. If you ever thought you couldnโ€™t be adventurous and bold in your kitchen and are only limited to typical white or neutral toned tiles, think again. From yellow to green to all shades of blue, you can really make a statement with colored tiles. I love this blue subway tile backsplash from Jenn Feldman Design. Definitely a daring look for those looking to make a statement with their kitchen that looks sophisticated and chic. This sage green glass subway tile has a modern look, yet would still create a calm and cool look for a kitchen. And I love this blue ceramic subway tile that features a hand-crafted natural worn look that would compliment a lot of different decor styles. This glossy emerald hexagon ceramic tile is so dramatic and stylish. And if warmer tones are more your thing, you can consider styles like this coral ceramic subway tile โ€” itโ€™s a vibrant shade without being too loud.

2 UNEXPECTED TEXTURES

If you are looking to create a tiled look, but want to go a different route than the traditional look of shiny or matte tiles, consider textured tiles or different materials than ceramic or porcelain. I LOVE the below look by The Tile Shop that shows how eye catching textured tiles can look. For a more shiny blue look, this smokey blue tile is a glossy, textured, geometric tile in a deep moody blue shade that would add a dramatic look to a kitchen. This silver grey limestone is an example of the new textures and shapes being seen. While it is actually limestone, it has a wood texture look to it that I think is so interesting. This textured neutral handmade tile is so unique. I love the color and the modern look you get, and it is handmade from clay so it adds a natural, earthy element to it that is nice for a kitchen.

3 MOSAICS

New types of mosaic tiles are having a moment right now. Itโ€™s easy to see whyโ€” there are so many unique, intricate patterns and color combinations to pick from that can then serve as art on the wall, as they all are eye-catching! I love these small mosaic tiles that add color to the kitchen without being over the top. This blue and white mosaic tile has a contemporary pattern and weathered look to it, which I think is a good balance here. I like the overall look the tiles create when put togetherโ€” different then a typical mosaic pattern, and it makes it much more interesting!

4 MARBLE

Marble will always be a good choice for a kitchen backsplash, but if you are looking to try something a little different, consider the different marble colors being seen instead of the traditional white look. Grey, purple, and even black is being seen โ€” like one of my favorites here : this dark grey that shows a lot of the natural veins and gives off the elegant look you can always rely on with marble. It would look amazing in a kitchen! And, if you canโ€™t decide between a mosaic tile or marble, why not do both โ€” and go for a style like this polished marble mosaic tile. I love the combination of the polished, classic marble with a unique geometric pattern.

5 NEW SHAPES & GEOMETRIC PATTERNS

Perhaps consider a new shape or pattern than the norm. This is another big trend now, with the look of scalloped shaped, hexagons, and diamond shapes for instance, being seen more and more. I like the look of this leaf shape tile with a textured appearance. This dark grey subway tile is a good option for adding an unexpected pattern into your kitchen in a subtle way โ€” the standard rectangle tiles each feature geometric patterns designs that when displayed together on a backsplash create new shapes and patterns as you can see below.

6 METALLIC TILES

If you are looking to add a bit of glam or luxe to your kitchen, then metallic tiles are just for you. This trend started being seen a few years ago and is growing in popularity with different looks being showcased. From shiny stainless steel tiles that give the appearance of metallic to shimmering or matted copper, silver, and nickel styles in any and all shapes and sizes, this trend works well for kitchen backsplashes as stainless steel appliances are of the norm now and this is the perfect pairing to match those. There are even affordable options like this peel and stick stainless steel version that I am in love with โ€” the different shades and the honeycomb shape would dramatically transform a kitchen!
