Liven Up Your Home with the Top 2019 Trends in Interior Design
There are always going to be trends that come and go in design. Additionally, there are certain design schemes that will just always work no matter what the style or season, so you should never feel like you have to stay “in trend” and update your whole home every year. But, rather, just like an update to your fashion wardrobe, an update to your home may just need minor tweaks and additions that incorporate what you already have. If you are looking to update your space, here are some current trends this year in interior design that will continue to surge into the fall season.
Natural decor
The connection of nature with design is being seen more and more. It really isn’t a trend in my opinion, as it will always look good having natural materials incorporated into a space. Using organic textiles and materials like linen, leather, wood are ways to bring a more natural look into your space. The key is to utilize materials in their natural state, like reclaimed wood vs finished wood for instance. And you can never go wrong with plants! Even if you don’t feel you have the green thumb to keep one alive, there are so many faux options that will still serve the role of bringing outdoor energy into your space. I also think it is very fitting this time of season to emphasize more natural design elements, as fall embraces all the earthy tones seen in nature. Investing in something “natural” will also serve your design style well into future years as it can easily add to & enhance so many spaces.
Velvet
Is velvet ever not “in” for home decor? I think not.. At least in terms of lush pillows and chairs. This season, you can incorporate some velvet into your decor in patterns, solids, and virtually every color. It is such an easy way to add a bit of luxe and style to a space, without being overly done because it is a soft texture that is still inviting to sit on or curl up next to. Just like our wardrobes will be seeing this season, velvet in home decor is most fitting and still going strong for the fall and winter seasons.
Bold & Moody Colors
Colors like deep indigo, emerald green, bold teal , and dark charcoal are having a moment right now. If you ever wanted to try a dark color, but were hesitant to take the plunge, there are creative ways to try this trend out without being committed long-term, like temporary wallpaper for a wall(s) or bookshelves. These colors are also being seen in different decor accessories so that’s also another option. Of course, you can also take the plunge and go all out with paint. Maybe try a dominant accent wall in an office or bedroom like the ideas below. I personally am really loving emerald green and dark blues being used in less expected places like bathrooms and kitchens - which is another option beyond paint: colored tiles!
Curved Furniture
Furniture is seeing the emergence of curved silhouettes into chairs and sofas. It adds a sense of coziness when you look at these pieces, which makes them perfect for living and family rooms, where relaxation is key. And depending on the style, it also gives a nod to Old Hollywood in the 1930s. If you are looking for that regal look, opt for a sofa, club or wing chair with added curved dimension. I really like the first image below, a Williams Sonoma look, that shows how curved chairs can be cozy while also being tailored and chic. The curved furniture isn’t just limited to upholstered furniture, as you can also try out curved pieces in the form of woven chairs and bar stools for a new look in your space.
Patterned Wallpaper
I am all about the patterned wallpaper trend that only continues to be on trend for home design. The only question is how to narrow down from ALL the amazing colors, textures, prints and patterns that are offered everywhere. Botanical and floral prints have been more popular this year, as seen in two of the examples below. Both really show how patterned wallpaper can both transform a space dramatically and also be as unique and fitting to your own personal style.
Animal Prints
Now, I don’t always love animal prints in home decor. Depending on the other colors and overall style, it can sometimes be too overpowering. This year, animal prints have been seen done in different ways in design for the home, whether it be subtle soft colors of leopard prints for rugs or wallpaper, or the popularity of less common animal prints like python (which makes sense if you have seen how BIG that is in fashion this year), and I’m all about it. I also like seeing animal motifs used like in the image below that displays a leopard embroidered on a pillow, which is an alternative if you aren’t feelin’ animal prints - Fun, unique, classic all in one!
