Bohemian Modern Bedroom for a Young Adult or Teenager
One thing I loved about being a child was my well-decorated bedroom I had. It was my own colorful space to imagine and relax in. For a teen or young adult, that can be even more desirable. And like other rooms in the home, a facelift may be necessary after a certain period of time. Whether you are looking to create a bedroom style for a teen, young adult, or even style your first apartment out on your own, the boho style can be adapted to work for various ages. I created this bedroom look that is a perfect mix of bohemian and modern styles and could really work for any of those scenarios. This style is being seen more and more especially with the younger generation because of the free spirit, earthy vibe that it gives off that is easy to create. I wanted to show how to mix that with modern style for a bit of more elevated take on boho, with the end result being a space that is both sophisticated and cozy, and is cool yet also charming. I say this is for a young adult or teen, but I really think it would work for anyone, including a younger aged child โ they deserve a stylish space too, right?
Often times when updating or starting out from scratch on furnishing a bedroom for a teen or even college age, the main concern is cost. After all, with the rate they change their style, how do you know what to invest in for a room that will be worthwhile? I think starting with quality timeless furniture pieces is key. Then, you can find accent pieces โ including a lot of affordable options like Iโve featured hereโ to make your look come to life!
Invest in timeless pieces
I think it starts with the right key pieces, ones that arenโt โtrendyโ, but timeless versatile quality furniture pieces that will be worth the investment and can easily adapt to other styles or looks as time goes on. Obviously if you already have furniture and are just looking to accessorize a space, you can still bring this look to life with accessories like whatโs featured here in this post. But if you are starting from scratch, these timeless furniture pieces are ones I really like. The bed and nightstand shown are from Pottery Barn Teen. It is a nice light wash of wood that is great for a bedroom and these quality pieces would serve you for years to come. You could also shop the matching double dresser if you prefer, but I like to mix things up. So a darker wood dresser would be my next investment pick, like the one I show featured from La-Z-Boy. This shade of wood works because it pairs perfectly with a lot of the rattan pieces that really speak to the boho style.
Accent with natural materials
The key to getting a bohemian vibe for a room is definitely with the natural woven materials like rattan and wicker. Incorporating those really help bring the natural and earthy feels alive for a space. For this look, I mixed in a rattan mirror, wicker hamper, rattan and glass decorative storage boxes, and a rattan chair. I like the chair in particular because it could work for a desk vanity, or simply accent chair for the bedroom. The black detail also makes it work well with modern accents. Another key woven item is the natural woven wall art that is a great focal point above the bed as shown.
Cozy is Key
Can you have too many pillows? Nahโฆ especially not for a room like this. Decorative pillows can be accented on both the bed and on the floor for extra comfort. And speaking of the floor, the chic woven ottoman is not only comfortable, but also can work as seating with those floor pillows, as you can situate it in a perfect little corner. This is also a great small space solution as it also serves as storage for whatever clutter you need to contain. Another key piece is a great pom or tassel blanket. Iโve featured 2 options below, but you can also find endless options on Kirklandโs, which is a great affordable source for home goods.
Add in modern details
I love a room with art, and this room is no exception. Bringing in modern and abstract art adds color and style to this room. You donโt have to have all the art match, but with these pieces for instance, the teal color featured in both compliments with the teal from the rug and pillow. I like adding a little eclectic or fun piece and the Peacock framed art is a great example of how to do that. The colorful and chic wall hooks are a nice subtle color addition, as well (and will make you want to hang your clothes up!) Adding just a touch of black in the form of the throw blanket, metal accents, and lumbar pillow is what helps modernize this look as well. To balance out the rattan and wicker accents, consider some modern style lighting like this room shows:
the floor lamp is actually the perfect lamp for this room, as it actually features the glass lamp suspended by a rope โ perfect mix of modern and boho
the table lamp is a beautiful rose colored glass lamp with a chic patterned lampshade
the light fixture is a sleek glass pendant โ a nice modern accent for a room like this
