A Master Bathroom Gets A New Look
I recently took on a bathroom remodel project for very special people — my parents. The layout itself of their master bathroom is one you don’t often see these days with a vanity area connected through the master bedroom with a wide open doorway and the bath and toilet being enclosed off to the left of the vanity area through a separate door. The plan was to keep the same floor layout in place, but gut all the existing elements including the bathtub, flooring, vanity, and mirrors for newer upgrades, with the biggest and most dramatic change being replacing the bathtub with a glass shower.
The Vision:
They knew they wanted white subway tile for the shower walls, so I helped them decide on a color palette for the flooring, vanity, wall color, and remaining elements that would work well with that, with the goal of being to add more white and lighter tones throughout to open up the entire space.
FLOORING:
Additionally, with their vanity area being open into the master bedroom, I took that into consideration for complimentary flooring that would flow well next to the carpet. We ultimately decided on this Leonia Silver 12-in x 24-in Glazed Porcelain Tile for the floor that is a perfect transition from the bedroom into the bathroom. I opted for the long tile panels versus the squares to help elongate the space because while this is a master bedroom, it is on the smaller side so the goal overall was visually creating a larger space. And while the color is described as silver, it actually is more of a taupe-like silver shade, with a natural finish that gives the look of a travertine floor despite it being porcelain.
SHOWER TILE:
For the shower walls, we went with this White Ceramic 2 x 8 Tile and used a light silver grout. I really like the size of the tile that you don’t often find easily.
For the shower pan and shower niche, we went with Gray Mosaic 12 X 12 Porcelain Hexagon Tile with a gray grout.
A floating marble corner shower seat was added, as well.
WALLS + CEILING:
In looking for a warm neutral gray beige color for the wall paint, we went with Heron Plume by Sherwin-Williams, that is great choice for any space when you want a neutral light color without it being plain white.
A white beadboard ceiling was installed that helped really brighten up the overall space, as you can see from the progress photo below. This option is great for giving a seamless, even look to a ceiling, and in our case, a great update from the popcorn style ceiling.
VANITY:
We opted for a freestanding vanity for a more modern look. With the wall space there being just under 60 inches wide, we opted for this 48” Gray Double Sink Vanity With White Marble Top to allow enough space on each side to be able to leave it freestanding and spacious. While we could have found a slightly wider vanity, there would have been that narrow edge of space on each side that you could never really access, but still be prone to dirt and dust.
FIXTURES & HARDWARE:
Brushed nickel was the chosen finish for the shower head and towel ring racks. And aged brass hardware was the plan for the vanity that we thought would come sans knobs and pulls. But surprisingly the vanity came with the brushed nickel hardware so my parents are really feeling it for the space. This is great way to show how different finishes can work for a space and also a great example of how original visions can change during the course of a project — With the vision board featured above for this project where brass was shown, you can get an idea of what that would look like compared to the all nickel finish look that we decided on. With the final additions of art to be added on the side walls of the vanity, it will still allow for infusion of brass frames to warm up the space. Our chosen vanity came furnished with the nickel faucets as well.
