How to Display House Numbers

When it comes to the exterior of a home, great details can help to create a great first impression and further enhance your home’s curb appeal. One particular detail that can add style is house numbers. You can find options that work with your home’s style and add that final detail to make your home stand out beautifully. There are a lot of different options as far as size, metal, and font style to consider for house numbers. I’m sharing some tips to help you narrow down the best option for your house, as well as where to place your numbers.

SIZE

What size of house numbers should you choose? This will totally be up to you. And also depends on where you what to place your numbers. I typically like using options between 4” - 6” in height, but sometimes you may want to go with a larger number for a more eye-catching look and easier readability. For a front door option, these 4 INCH FLUSH MOUNT BLACK METAL HOUSE NUMBERS seen below are a great classic look in a small size.

And you can see how these 6 INCH OIL-RUBBED BRONZE TRADITIONAL HOUSE NUMBERS seen below compares to a 4 inch option by looking at how each fits into a standard horizontal strip of siding. A 6 inch option will fit it completely and a 4 inch option will fit within it.

COLOR & STYLES

There are a lot of metal finishes to consider for your house numbers, as well as what style to go with. The modern look of displaying house numbers individually onto a house continues to be a popular choice, as it is timeless, clean, and gives an updated look to a house’s appearance. You can never go wrong with a matte black metal traditional look that look great for classic designed homes, but also can work for any house design. It adds a polished, timeless look to the exterior that works with any color of exterior. For a more modern look, you can find black modern style numbers that can add instantly add a fresh look to a house.

I also love brass for a variety of looks. This 6 INCH UNLACQUERED BRASS TRADITIONAL HOUSE NUMBER is a beautiful option for adding timeless style to the front door area and looks great against light or white home exteriors. I also love this option because of it’s clean look — it is a floating style, which means it features a pin-mount method to install so you don’t see any visible screws.

An aged brass style is another great finish option and can add some classic vintage style to the home. I love these POLISHED BRONZE CAST BRASS NUMBERS that are hand-crafted and allow you to choose size and whether or not you want screw holes added so you really get to customize it to suit your needs.

Of course, there are house plates that can still look great and offer a bit more style to a house. For an alternate to metal, I love a stone or concrete style. This CAST IN STONE CONCRETE ADDRESS PLAQUE adds a great modern look to a house that is available in a variety of color options so you can find one to pair to your home’s exterior or add a neutral color to contrast to the house for a stand out look that is still understated. I also love this CUSTOM ADDRESS PLAQUE that comes in a variety of color styles (the white and silver combo is particularly stunning).

PLACEMENT

When you know what look you want to go for with your numbers, then you need to decide on placement.

Front Door Area :

The most common place and always a great choice, the front door of the home can serve as the perfect backdrop for your house numbers. Placing on the door is a great option for making it more readily visible, or you can also mount above the door frame. These 6 INCH BLACK MODERN NUMBERS are placed above the door, with extra spacing between each number for a fresh new modern look. This is a great look for white exteriors, whether it be a new home, a farmhouse style home, or even an older home needing an updated touch, all can benefit with a style like this.

To the side of the front door is another popular choice and can allow you to coordinate your house numbers with other details for a cohesive look.

I also love placing the numbers vertically next to the front door for a different look.

And you can never go wrong with displaying on the door itself.

Architectural Details:

To make your numbers much more visible from the curb, make use of your home’s architectural details for where to place your numbers. I love small modern numbers added at the center of an awning or beam. It is a nice modern look that works with both traditional and newer style houses.

If you like a minimal front door look, you can add house numbers to a column, mounted vertically for an updated way to display. This clean look continues to grow in popularity, as it really benefits every style of house for a timeless look.

Another option is mounting horizontally on a column.

Another option for placement on a house’s exterior is any prominent area with an exterior house light, like in between a pair of garage doors or the side of a house for instance. It’s a great option for a very subtle way to number the home.
